SURFACE CHEMICAL TREATMENT

NO COATING BUILD-UP, BLACK FINISH, ENHANCED CORROSION RESISTANCE

Black oxide is a chemical conversion surface treatment that transforms the metal surface into a uniform black iron oxide layer (Fe₃O₄ - magnetite). The process is carried out by immersing the component in alkaline solutions at controlled temperature.

The treatment does not involve any material deposition and does not affect the dimensional tolerances of the components.

  • No dimensional change: coating thickness < 1 µm
  • Temperature resistance up to 300°C
  • Possibility of applying oils, sealants, or top coats to prevent surface powdering
  • Increased corrosion resistance when combined with oils/sealants/top coats
  • Reduced surface reflectivity
  • Applicable to carbon steel and stainless steel
  • Uniform black aesthetic finish
  • Process compliant with REACH and RoHS regulations

THICKNESS

Black oxide is a chemical conversion treatment that does not involve any material build-up. The coating thickness is less than 1 µm and does not affect dimensional tolerances, making it suitable for precision components.

APPLICABLE MATERIALS

The process is applicable to carbon steels and stainless steels (AISI 200, 300, and 400 series).

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE

Blackened components can withstand temperatures up to 300°C.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

Corrosion resistance can be further enhanced through the application of oils, sealants, or top coats.
