Post-Oxidation Process

Surface Hardening Treatments

Cover
Main board

Post-oxidation is a surface treatment applied immediately after thermochemical processes such as gas nitriding or ferritic nitrocarburizing, with the purpose of providing corrosion resistance to the component.

The treatment is applied to nitrided or nitrocarburized parts.

CHARACTERISTICS

Type of treatment:

Surface treatment following thermochemical processes

Surface appearance:

After treatment, components show a dark grey/antracite coloration; an optional subsequent sealing process provides a black glossy appearance.

Process description:

The process is carried out in a furnace at temperatures between 400 and 500°C and leads to the formation of a protective layer composed of ferric/ferrous oxides (Fe₃O₄ – magnetite).

ADVANTAGES

  • Significant increase in corrosion resistance
  • Improved surface aesthetics
  • Chemical barrier protection
  • Better compatibility with oils and technical fluids

PROCESSABLE MATERIALS

  • nitrided components
  • nitrocarburized components
